Love Children, Machine Children

What makes someone human, and what makes a life valuable?

If every action seems conscious, is that consciousness? Does origin matter, or do embodiment, memory, and relationships make someone who they are?

A finite life might gain urgency from its ending. Does its value depend on that limit? Endless life could sustain curiosity or become a pursuit of sensation without satisfaction.

Choosing a child's form could resemble choosing between shelter and exposure. Protection can preserve possibilities or restrict them. Risk can permit discovery without making suffering worthwhile.

Does mind transfer preserve someone or replace someone who dies? Where does the dead person end and the living person begin? If identity consists of bits, does it depend on particular electrons, the program, or an uninterrupted process?

If two copies wake, which is you? Both could be conscious without either guaranteeing your survival.
